Next time I see them, I'm going to see if they'll sign stuff for me like "I wish you were dead, Sincerely, Rhett Miller." or "You could stand to lose a few pounds. Love, Murry."
I hope you crash your momma's car.

Hi Jay, my friend and I met you and your wife in front of the stage Thursday (my friend is the one who let you up front to get the setlist). Honestly, to me it sounds like Ken was just being funny. I can't think anything too bad of him after watching him purposely put on a great show for the three younger boys who were in the front row right in front of him.

Anyway, hope you get past it and continue just enjoying the music.

    Re: Can't Do It

Thanks to those of you who offered suggestions.  After a week has gone by, I cannot even listen to an Old 97s song.  I just skip them when they come up on my iPod.  I'm going to put some distance between myself and this situation and maybe I can enjoy the music again.  I just can't see investing my time and money into a group that doesn't feel they need every fan they can find.  I won't be back any time soon so don't invest time in responding.

To paraphrase a Cross Canadian Ragweed lyric "F#ck Key Bethea, f#ck the Old 97s, I'm leavin.

    Re: Can't Do It

This incident reminds me of a Zen story:

"A young monk went to a private instructional talk with his Zen teacher. The teacher and monk sat, on the floor, directly across from each other. After they sat in silence for several minutes, the monk asked “What do you see?” The teacher replied: “I see a buddha.” Silence again for several minutes, then the teacher asked: “What do you see?” The monk gave a quick response: “ I see a useless bag of bones.” The teacher said nothing, but placed his palms together and made a deep bow to the monk. The period was over and the monk left.

The monk was exultant. He had bested his teacher in a one-to-one exchange. He could not contain his excitement. Later, in the day, while working in the kitchen with a senior monk, he retold the story of the exchange in a triumphant tone. It was a sign of his progress on the path.

The senior monk simply smiled: “No, it was the teacher who has taken you. When he spoke, he showed what was in his mind, and when you replied, you revealed what was in yours!” The young monk had no further response."

Personally, I think that what Ken wrote on the shirt was a reflection of what is in him, and not much about you. Whether you decide to take it a reflection of hate towards you and how you respond to Old 97's music is a reflection of what's in you. Just an opinion, not a judgement in any way.

    Re: Can't Do It

Jay, I was there for the show...and right by you when you confronted him about what he wrote on your shirt.  Woolybugger hit it on the head -- you idolized this guy (and the band) and he was just hanging out man.

And to clear some things up -- he did go back stage in a hurry but it was quite possibly just to stop watching Todd Rundgren...it was Todd's first show for that tour and I'm pretty sure his first time playing in about 3 months.  He broke 3 guitar strings and brought an 11 year old on stage to play bass...this is about the time I left.

    Easy days all,

    Jason

    Re: Can't Do It

you gotta get past this man.  i've met ken on two occassions - new haven in summer of '04 when he (and the rest of the band) signed the 97's poster from toad's.  we actually chatted it up for a while after the show including football talk.  met up with him and murry last summer in nyc after the rockin the river cruise (who all else was at that one - that was one crazy evening!) and we took pictures with him and murry that we now have on stage with us at our shows - if you look close enough...

going to see them in dewey beach on the 31st, the next night in ny and the next night at the 'comah in wellfleet.  can't wait!  road trip!

    Re: Can't Do It

I think you're overreacting. I met Ken in Helotes and he was frickin' awesome and really down to earth and nice. He told me a bunch of stuff about his guitar set up and we talked after the show for like 20 minutes
The Easy Way gets harder all the time...

    Re: Can't Do It

As a rule, I don't approach musicians/celebrities/etc. after shows. Not that I think it's wrong for anyone to do it -- it's just a personal thing for me.

As we were walking out of the show in New Orleans the other night and my wife noticed a small group of fans waiting outside the tour bus. She made a joking comment that she was surprised I wasn't going to wait along with them, given my relative obsession with Rhett and Co. I asked her if she would like it if, after a long, hard day at work, her students (she's a teacher) were all lined up outside her house waiting for her when she got home. I was mostly kidding -- again, I have no disdain for autograph-seekers -- but I guess I figure that if they've rocked me thoroughly for the cash I laid down for the ticket, they've fulfilled their responsibility to me.

I'm sorry that happened to you, though -- but, like some of the other posters mentioned, it could be written off as a miscommunication or a misunderstanding on your part or Ken's. He didn't seem very prickly at the New Orleans show -- bending down and having a conversation during songs with a few of the fans standing around us at the front. But you never know what stresses a person is dealing with at any given moment.
