Re: Announcement Concert for Obama... Ruined my afternoon

I would rather see them hawking Alpo or Cadillacs. If they did a benefit concert for a worthy cause that would be even better. Wink

    Re: Obama announcement

Thanks to "from the plaines." You understood my point.  The band and every citizen of this country has a right to their opinion. I just can't support someone whose ideals and values are so adverse to my own.  And, no, it isn't that different than not seeing a movie because of an actor's sexuality or social opinions. It's exactly the same.  But, at some point, you have to take some kind of stand for what you think is right. For me, it means I don't see Susan Sarandon movies and don't by Dixie Chicks' music. It's not like I disown everyone who votes differently than me. But, they didn't just say they are voting for this guy. They are actively working to put him in office by participating in this event.  In November, you have one vote, but the popularity of actors, musicians, etc., in our society does have an impact and you vote for them every day!!! And, Tom,  NO, I don't think Obama has the power to undo all I hold dear and I didn't say that. I said Obama stands for undoing the things I hold dear. As you know, an American president isn't a dictator and doesn't have ultimate control but a president does have power. Just one example--- have you seen Obama's speech outlining his plan to disarm our military? What do you think would happen if he somehow succeeded?  Can you speak Chinese? Our freedom would be nonexistent.  It's an easy decision not to support the 97's because of this but not a painless one. I'd much rather listen to them than Lee Greenwood or Toby Keith. I think Wayne Newton is a Republican? Maybe he'll drop a new album soon. Respectfully, Kara Lee

I mean, really, what did you think they stood for?? One talk with them and it should have been obvious that they wouldn't vote Republican.

    Re: 97s get political?

Have they ever done that?? Not anytime I've seen them. I say good for them, they're doing something for this country, whether you agree with their position or not. They are involved in the election process, as every American has the right to be. Who says we want to know what your political views are, yet we did hear yours, right here. No different than the boys did.

wrong badart. i never expressed my political views on this forum. i am expressing my rock n roll views. my point is a rock show is no place for politics and i am unaware of the 97s venturing down this path in the past. i prefer drowning in the days!

I think John Lennon and Bob Dylan would disagree.

    Obama Rally

OK, I'm not a fan of Obama, but the Old 97's are doing what's in their heart. Give them a break! You have a right to campaign for who you want, so should they -individually or as a group.  Old 97's have a talent that is for them to use at their discretion. They are not selling out, and it has no effect on the music or how much I enjoy it. (I do enjoy it).  Hang in there guys, the people that truly like your music have no intentions of stopping now.  Dallas loves you!

You're right, they can campaign and vote for whoever they want. If Obama represents their views better, then they should vote for him, I don't care. The problem is that when they use their celebrity status to try and influence people they are going to alienate some of their fans. But who knows, they might make more fans as a result of endorsing Obama. I'm actually curious to know why they support Obama but I doubt they could give me a logical answer anyways. Devil

    Re: Obama Rally

Are people of a voting age really that easily persuaded by a celebrity?Sad  I'm a fan of their music, not their  political opinion, and anyone that votes for a Presidential candidate because of a band, well......... It's one thing to perform at a political rally. It would be different if they did it during a concert. I don't think this is the case.  It is interesting to see others POV on the subject.

    Re: 97s get political?

I have no issue with musicians lending their voice(s) to the political cause that moves them.  If Bruce Springsteen, (my ultimate hero, and stalwart beacon of integrity) can donate his music for Obama to use in his campaign, then the 97's can play a benefit.  Of course, they're doing the benefit for the guy that I want to win the election, perhaps I would feel differently if they were helping raise funds for a candidate I didn't like (not naming names).

Incidentally, I just saw Counting Crows in Toronto last week, and not a political word was spoken.  Adam made a short speech about getting involved in local community charitable works, and listed some Toronto-based charities that could used help (Springsteen-esque!)

    Re: Obama Rally

Unfortunately there are some voters who are influenced by celebrities but thankfully not many. I doubt the Old 97's endorsement is going to change too many minds either. But why do some celebrities try to use their "star power" to persuade voters? In many cases it's because they are arrogant and think they can influence people. I doubt that's the case with the Old 97's but I'm not aware of them publicly saying anything, they're just doing a fundraiser concert. However, some of the things I've heard "famous" Obama supporters say really blows my mind and not in a good way.

    Re: 97s get political?

When i saw counting crows in the states Adam made a speech about registering to vote and getting involved in the politcal process. It was too long-winded for my taste and i yawned thru the whole thing
