    Who else...?

Just curious who else everyone listens to? I've downloaded some Sodajerk, Whiskeytown, Wilco, etc. and they're decent, but can't get into them nearly as much as the Old 97's. I will say I like The Good Life quite a bit.

     So who else...?

Blue Rodeo is a popular band up here, north of the border.  They are a country-rock hybrid band, though a little more laid back than the 97's.  The 97's opened for them here last summer - my dream line-up.  You might like them....

Speaking of north of the border, the Tragically Hip are great too. As far as Toronto bands go, they are hands down better than the mysteriously  popular Barenaked Ladies. And they like hockey! Me like hockey!

When are the 97's going to do a hockey song? There's some banter on a bootleg I have where Rhett tells a story about how he went to a hockey game (prolly the Stars...bleeeeaccchhh) and someone yelled out, "Go hockey!"

Wow...how did that get back on to the 97's? Ah well...cheers!

    Me like hockey!

Other related type music I like...

The Jayhawks...not sure if they're still together, Gov't Mule, Lucinda Williams, Drive-By Truckers, Ryan Adams, Yonder Mountain (saw them open for the 97's in Buffalo last summer), and of course Wilco.

    Re: Who else...?

Oh, Gear Daddies....*sigh*  love the Gear Daddies!  Wish they were still recording Wink  Similar, but not nearly as deep, sadness re: Trip Shakespeare!  I echo bands/artists already mentioned, particularly Lucinda Williams.

So, gebobs -- you must check out (if you haven't already), the Gear Daddie's Zamboni song ("I Wanna Drive a Zamboni").  I'm at work so I can't confirm my memory, but I believe it was a hidden track off of Billy's Live Bait (one with the green cover..??).  And other random l'hockey-ness:  I've been into reading books about Herb Brooks lately.  I don't love hockey and don't keep up, but I kinda like it. Reminds me of younger days.

    See ya!

Maybe the hokey pokey IS what it's all about.

    Re: Who else...?

Oh, geez...I don't have too much indie cred, but will listen to just about anything all the way from old Patsy Cline all the way to My Chemical Romance.  The 97's are my all time favorites, but I'm also a fan of Chris Isaak, John Eddie, Matchbox 20, The Refreshments back in the day, Nine Inch Nails...I am eclectic.
    Still a firefly.

    Re: Who else...?

Besides the 97's, it's the Beatles/solo, Kinks, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Miles/Coltrane.

    Re: Who else...?

Re: Lucinda Williams, I strongly recommend starting with this album:  Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

Next would be her self-titled, which is pretty different but has some excellent songwriting; the liner notes on the self-titled are a great read, too. They should start making liner notes downloadable, not just cover art....IMO

    Re: Who else...?

Been listeting to a lot of Wilco lately. Check out Being There. Great album! Just give it a few listens. They'll grow on you, much like the taste of fine wine, or foot fungus from a dirty shower.
