    Best Old 97's moment

Was wondering what was the most special moment you ever had at an Old 97's show?

Several years ago, the band was playing a little club in St. Louis.  The club was actually in the basement of a restaurant.  You've probably seen Murry come out with Rhett to do an encore of "Valentine"---well, this time Rhett didn't come out for whatever reason and Murry did the song a capella.  The place was stone silent.  It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.  Rhett was watching from the sidelines and you could see from the look on his face that he was as blown away as we were.

That was the all time best moment for me.

Wow. I wish I could have seen that. Valentine is one of my favorites. I've only seen them twice so I guess my best moment was getting meet the guys. Esp. Murry because I got to talk to him for more than 2 seconds like all the others. (All of them were busy signing stuff and taking pictures--I got some too!) I told him how much I love Valentine and Color of a Lonely Heart and that I was sooo glad they played at the record store (Good Records in Dallas) b/c I couldn't get House of Blues tickets. He seemed pretty pleased to hear that. lol

    Bonnaroo 2005.

A friend and I got to spend time with the guys backstage.  They were all great, but Murry just hung-out with us for about 45 minutes.  We talked about everything from music to the fact that we have the same digital camera.  Good times.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

I've only seen the 97's in a large venue, so no "special moments" per se.  BUT at a solo Rhett club show, my friend and I got to meet him afterward.  He was very nice, and posed for a pic with us (desktop on both my friend's and my computers to this day!)

Oh, I guess another cool thing was that I have had reply e-mails from 2 of the guys (Ken and Murry), which I find mighty cool!  Needless to say, they have been archived!  Both were very nice & friendly, Ken even explained one of the references in Coahuila, as I had told him that it is my 8 year old daughter's favourite 97's song.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

Six years ago when Rhett's first solo album came out I was working for a major book retailer and he came into our offices to perform and promote the new record.  My niece was visiting that week so I brought her to work and we got to meet Rhett afterward - he spoke to us both, signed my Old 97's poster and posed for a pic with my niece.  How many lead singers would pose for a pic with an 8-year-old and be so sweet about it?

I've talked to Rhett numerous times over the course of the last 10 years or so, and he's always been sweet.  That's part of the appeal of these guys.  They act human!  Rhett loves kids (he's got a couple himself), so I can just imagine he would have been happy to pose with your niece.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

Other than the fact these guys are amazingly talented, what I love about them is that they are *genuinely* sweet. Some people can be "nice" but they aren't faking it. When I saw them at Good Records they just seemed so happy to be signing everyones stuff and posing for pictures. Especially Rhett. Although I didn't get to really talk to him I could tell he is one of the sweetest guys out there. It actually made me love them even more!

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

I've been to most of the shows in the Philly and NYC area for at least the past 7 years. My favorite was probably a show in Philly after Drag it Up was released when Murray played bass in the opening act with his wife singing lead. All of there shows have been fantastic, but Murray getting the crowd to cheer for his wife (who is very talented) was a cool connection to the audience.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

Gang: living in Arizona limits access to the Old 97s.  But I can say my two best moments were when they came through AZ supporting Sattelite Rides.  They played a small (now defunct) venue called Nita's Hideaway.  There was not real stage so it was hard to see the band.  Then, I was fortunate to be in Philly when they played the Trocadero after Drag It Up.  That was terrific.

So no stories of meeting the band.  Just happy to see them every several years.

Guys: Please stop through AZ on your way between SoCal and the rest of the world.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

I've only seen the guys play twice--both at the Pageant in St. Louis (side note: awesome venue--check it out if you're in the area). The first was July '07. I was so excited, we got there early, got great seats near the stage on Ken's side. Near the end of the show, a guy came to our table to ask for our spare chair, we obliged and he sat with friends at the table next to us. I'm a people watcher, so this isn't really a story everyone can appreciate. This guy was pretty into the music--like us, but when the boys played "Big Brown Eyes", that dude hopped up, started punching the air and screaming yeah! It was so much fun to watch him "spazz out" when he heard his (obviously) favorite song. This year, we again attended the concert at the Pageant. I was pretty sure we saw "Big brown eyes guy" in the bar before the concert, but I wasn't positive. He sat in nearly the same spot we did last year, so I caught a glance of him as they started to play the song. Yup, it was him, just as enthusiastic as last year. I don't know why that made my day, but to the spastic big brown eyes guy--thanks man, you were fun to watch. The band was fantastic both times, but this year's concert was just amazing. I've never seen a band with such energy and GUTS. Seeing them live again made my summer.

    Re: Best Old 97's moment

Alright, after much hemming and hawing, I’ve decided to share the following story.  Not to brag but because I figured the rest of you fans could/would appreciate it.  So, here goes:

My family and I recently traveled to Milwaukee from the Denver area for a wedding the night of the recent Summerfest show. Just after seeing them at the Gothic in Denver, my wife commented that I should “sneak” away from the reception to catch them there.  I gave it some serious thought but decided against it.  Oh well, some other time.

Saturday morning while looking for me, my wife thought she saw Murry checking in at our hotel.  I thought she was tripping.  I ran walked down to the lobby to see if I could catch a glimpse of the fellas, but to no avail.  Grrrrr.

Then, early that evening, I bumped into Rhett and Philip in the courtyard of our hotel.  Talk about star-struck!  I hope I didn't sound like a complete knucklehead.  I told them how much I loved their music, that they were my favorite band and that I enjoyed the show at the Gothic.  You know – all the stuff you’d say to them if you had their ear for a few seconds.  They seemed genuinely gracious.  They mentioned that they were going to catch a drink after the show in the hotel bar.  Wow.

Sure enough, they showed up (sans Murry) after the gig and sat down with me (and later, my wife) for a beer.  First Ken (and he didn’t even flip me off!!) and then Rhett and Philip.  For all you beer lovers out there, know this – these guys drink good beer.  No fizzy yellow crap.

I’m here to tell you that these are some great guys!  Sure we talked about the music/tour/etc, but we also talked about families and growing up and such.  Just down-to-earth things.  It kind of felt like catching up with old high school buddies or something.  Unbelievable.  I felt like the luckiest SOB alive.

Thank you Ken, Rhett and Philip for giving my wife and I a very pleasant life long memory.  You’re the best!  Murry, I hope fate gives us a chance to meet one day.

    Counting my blessings,

     -Robbie
