Alright, after much hemming and hawing, I’ve decided to share the following story. Not to brag but because I figured the rest of you fans could/would appreciate it. So, here goes:
My family and I recently traveled to Milwaukee from the Denver area for a wedding the night of the recent Summerfest show. Just after seeing them at the Gothic in Denver, my wife commented that I should “sneak” away from the reception to catch them there. I gave it some serious thought but decided against it. Oh well, some other time.
Saturday morning while looking for me, my wife thought she saw Murry checking in at our hotel. I thought she was tripping. I ran walked down to the lobby to see if I could catch a glimpse of the fellas, but to no avail. Grrrrr.
Then, early that evening, I bumped into Rhett and Philip in the courtyard of our hotel. Talk about star-struck! I hope I didn't sound like a complete knucklehead. I told them how much I loved their music, that they were my favorite band and that I enjoyed the show at the Gothic. You know – all the stuff you’d say to them if you had their ear for a few seconds. They seemed genuinely gracious. They mentioned that they were going to catch a drink after the show in the hotel bar. Wow.
Sure enough, they showed up (sans Murry) after the gig and sat down with me (and later, my wife) for a beer. First Ken (and he didn’t even flip me off!!) and then Rhett and Philip. For all you beer lovers out there, know this – these guys drink good beer. No fizzy yellow crap.
I’m here to tell you that these are some great guys! Sure we talked about the music/tour/etc, but we also talked about families and growing up and such. Just down-to-earth things. It kind of felt like catching up with old high school buddies or something. Unbelievable. I felt like the luckiest SOB alive.
Thank you Ken, Rhett and Philip for giving my wife and I a very pleasant life long memory. You’re the best! Murry, I hope fate gives us a chance to meet one day.
Counting my blessings,
-Robbie
