So anyone going to the show in Baltimore?  I'll be there, but it's an easy choice for me since I live 4 blocks west of the venue. 

I've been a big fan for years. I've been to their shows, even was lucky enough to meet and talk to part of the band after...I'm sooooo sad to read they are involved with such a liberal politician. Sure, we all have a right to express a PERSONAL opinion, but when any BAND (or celebrity) gets involved, it does take away from the way we feel about the band. Guys-keep your political opinions on the personal side, not in the name of your band.

Too bad for all those who are going to miss out on a great show.  For a $100 "VIP" ticket you also get to see a special acoustic performance by Miller and Hammond before the main show ($25 for just the show).

After reading all the nonsense in this thread, I'm a little ashamed to be associated with Old 97's fans.

I think John Lennon and Bob Dylan would disagree.  

 

And I'd disagree with them.  They succeeded *despite* their "message" songs, not because of them.  John was the most popular man in the world before he ventured into political songwriting, and Dylan moved past political songwriting as quickly as he could, which is the only reason he still has a career.  If he hadn't written "Like a Rolling Stone" and kept on that path, he would have died right along with the folk revival.

Seriously, how many times do you have to listen to "Imagine" and "Blowing in the Wind" before realizing how trite they really are?

Fortunately, the Olds have so far avoided message songs.  (Rhett, please don't put Government Man on a record!)

And if they want to play benefit shows, that's their business.  Doesn't interfere in any way with how awesome Too Far to Care is.

I'm not going to dwell on the negativity in these posts.  I'm going to the benefit tonight and couldn't be more proud of the band for taking a stand and pitching in in this crucial campaign.

 I see that doors for the reception/pre-Concert by Murry/Rhett are 5 pm.  Does anyone know when they are actually playing???

SerialLadyKiller why is that? They are just acting on principal, just like the Old 97s are.

I've gotta admit, I'm just gobsmacked that this is stirring people up as much as it is.  Granted, I'm from Canada, and politics are decidedly less polarized here, but I can't imagine deciding not to like, for example, Great Big Sea or someone whose music I love, just because I disagree with their political leanings.  I mean sure, don't go to that particular show, if you don't want your $$ going toward Mr. Obama's campaign, but seriously, deciding not to listen to a band you love anymore?  Aren't you kind of cutting off your nose to spite your face?

This election is bringing out some pretty strong emotions it seems. If the benefit show was in Chicago I wouldnt go to it. But I wouldnt stop liking the band over it. But if the band all the sudden became very politcal I would probaley not like the band as much. One thing I have always liked about the band was the witty and quirky lyrics. And honestly I think that it would be hard writing quriky lyrics about taxes and universal health care
