I think John Lennon and Bob Dylan would disagree.
And I'd disagree with them. They succeeded *despite* their "message" songs, not because of them. John was the most popular man in the world before he ventured into political songwriting, and Dylan moved past political songwriting as quickly as he could, which is the only reason he still has a career. If he hadn't written "Like a Rolling Stone" and kept on that path, he would have died right along with the folk revival.
Seriously, how many times do you have to listen to "Imagine" and "Blowing in the Wind" before realizing how trite they really are?
